MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google announced that from October 9, 2026, the available Gemini model options for free personal accounts will be limited. Users without a Google AI subscription will only have access to Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. Access to Flash or Pro will be discontinued under the new policy. The company detailed these modifications in an updated support document for its consumer artificial intelligence offerings. These regulations specifically affect personal Google accounts, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Existing Google AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash once the changes are implemented. Nevertheless, their subscription will no longer include Pro. Google has not specified a single date for transitioning all AI Plus users. Affected customers will receive an email indicating when their access will change. Meanwhile, users with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will continue to enjoy access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed as a quick-response model, Flash-Lite is optimized for straightforward, everyday tasks utilizing Gemini. Flash offers expanded capabilities without sacrificing speed for various requests. Pro is intended for more intensive workloads, such as complex mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google states that Pro can process text, images, files, and video, applying more advanced reasoning. Responses from Pro may also take longer to generate compared to other Gemini models.
Subscription-based Gemini plans retain broader model access
Google is introducing adjustable effort settings—low, medium, and high—for models available depending on the user’s plan. Higher effort settings enable models to allocate more resources for detailed responses, which also reduces the remaining usage allowance for that account. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will gain access to Deep Think, a feature for handling complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that employs maximum parallel reasoning for intricate requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier updates to how Gemini Apps track usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly caps are reached. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, feature usage, and conversation length. Advanced tools and premium models tend to deplete allowances more quickly than basic requests. The company extended these usage limit policies to users under 18 on July 24.
Different usage caps apply depending on Google AI subscription level
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s default usage restrictions. AI Plus members enjoy twice the standard limit, whereas AI Pro subscribers have four times the default allowance. AI Ultra offers either five or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, based on the subscription. Features like Deep Research, media creation, Pro, extended reasoning, and Deep Think can utilize larger parts of these limits. Consequently, paid plans not only provide expanded model access but also higher usage capacities.
These October updates affect Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not extend to all Google AI services. Work and school accounts are governed by separate access policies, and developer services have their own regulations. Users can modify, upgrade, or cancel their Google AI subscriptions via Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely solely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app up to date as the new access rules come into effect.
